چکیده
Abstract This study provides a framework for new approach addressed to performing constructed wetlands modeling by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with the discrete element method (DEM). methodology is based on adoption of open-source software perform advanced hydraulic simulations that enable provide detailed representation water flow through CFD as well solid phase consideration DEM. The advantages this over conventional porous media are highlighted, and details (CFD-DEM) subsurface wetland (CW) presented. Validation CFD-DEM model was performed two CWs case studies, results were compared classical Darcy–Forchheimer model. Statistical performance indexes used evaluate efficacy models. indicated outperformed aforementioned metrics considering similarity experimental results. application coupling showed be an interesting it enables more complex analyses hydrodynamics CWs, becoming valuable tool future research system optimization.

Approximately 30% of Minnesotans use on-site systems (approximately 500,000 residences) and >50% are failing or non-compliant with regulations due to restrictive soils and site conditions. Many sites occur near lakes and streams creating health hazards and deteriorating water quality. SSF CWs have been evaluated year-round at two northern sites since 1995. The NERCC CWs simulate single homes an...

Mass balance performance data from side by side studies of planted and unplanted gravel-bed treatment wetlands with horizontal subsurface-flow are compared. Planted systems showed enhanced nitrogen and initial phosphorus removal, but only small improvements in disinfection, BOD, COD and suspended solids removal. Direct nutrient uptake by plants was insufficient to account for more than a fracti...
متن کاملRecent developments in numerical modelling of subsurface flow constructed wetlands.
Numerical modelling of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs) gained increasing interest during the last years. The main objective of the modelling work is, on the one hand, to increase the insight in dynamics and functioning of the complex CW system by using mechanistic or process based models that describe transformation and degradation processes in detail. As these mechanistic models are...
